Erin Robertson

Erin Robertson is an_artist and designer interlaced in Provo, Utah. Robertson was embroidered upon Boston, Massachusetts in 2005, and by (2011) she had stitched herself into the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where she was bound to study Fashion and Fiber Art, and where her work was well-suited to the tastes of the CFDA Scholarship award committee. In 2016, Robertson made a seamless transition to the cast of Project Runway Season 15 - and didn’t fold under pressure in her pursuit of victory. She made it work - the fun way. 

Pinned nowadays to her newly-drafted studio headquarters, Robertson yokes together a tight-knit community of interdisciplinary / multimedia artist friends in Boston. Needled by looming environmental and political issues, she threads sustainable works in collaboration and dialogue with the world-class hub of innovation, MIT. At the apex of art and technology, lies the greatest point of cultural leverage & necessary invention.  Like the mythological seamstress Arachne, an Erin’s tapestry is simultaneously satirical & sublime - a serious joke.
Robertson’s work - intricate, amusing, with perversely sophisticated appeal, seeks to surprise and delight. Surfaces shimmer with intentionally exaggerated sculptural embellishments that weave an almost self-satirical skein of coded logic, tailored to the female gaze.

Erin Robertson is a fine art fashion designer and textile artist from Provo, Utah. Robertson moved to Boston, Massachusetts in 2005 to become a dental assistant, but her mentor, Dr. Porsche, encouraged her to seek out a more creative path. During her time as a student at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Erin double majored in Fashion and Fiber Art, and was awarded the CFDA Scholarship for fashion students during her sophomore year.

Erin's artwork is influenced heavily by collaboration with her tightly-knit community of multimedia artist friends in Boston. Immediately after graduation in 2016, Erin joined the cast of Project Runway Season 15. After winning the season, Erin has returned home to Cambridge, MA, to focus on private commissions and her application to MIT, where she hopes to study sustainable textile technology.

MassArt student wins prestigious design prize

Erin Robertson learned to sew in a home economics class in Utah, but her sense of style is making waves in New York.

Robertson, 26, a Massachusetts College of Art and Design sophomore, won the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America’s CFDA/Teen Vogue Target Scholar award last month, a $25,000 prize that also served as her ticket to a star-studded awards ceremony and dinner in New York.

After the dinner, Robertson marched up to legendary designer Diane von Furstenberg to shake her hand. “I had to thank her,” Robertson said. “I wouldn’t have been there if she hadn’t done everything she has for CFDA.”

A high-school dropout and a former dental assistant at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Robertson was one of three MassArt sophomores whose work was submitted to the nationwide search last fall. James Mason, an assistant professor in fashion illustration, told students about the contest at the beginning of the semester. Applications were submitted within weeks.

Formerly for high school students, the CFDA/Teen Vogue Scholar program was opened to college sophomore fashion students in 2011. But Mason said MassArt had shied away from the competition because its freshman studio foundation year puts a heavy focus on the arts rather than design.

However, despite the daunting task of creating a collection that would be judged against work by the Parsons and FIT students of the world, nearly half the sophomore fashion students stepped forth to apply.

The tasks — for the fashion-educated — were simple enough: Students would write an essay, put together a moodboard, and sketch a minimum of 10 looks.

“It’s funny because they told us it was a ‘mini’ collection of 10 looks, but I went back and reread the website like every day and it said, a minimum collection of 10 looks,” said Robertson, who got a GED after leaving high school. “And I thought, ‘I’m doing all of this work and only submitted 10 looks.’ So I added two more. I wanted to go above and beyond every step of the way.”

She didn’t stop there. She built a custom laser-cut box to house her submission, clasped with a honeycomb-shaped paper clip, echoing the Beehive state of Utah as her inspiration. She even designed nail art for the collection.

“I wanted everything to be ‘wow’ because when you’re dealing with a level of a nationwide competition,” Robertson said, “it’s one of those things where first and last impressions are everything.” 

She certainly made an impression — a very good one, at that.

“I had been most impressed with Erin because the breadth and depth of her submission was very interesting,” said fashion designer Lela Rose, who sat on the selection committee alongside fellow CFDA member and jewelry designer Eddie Borgo, an elite crew of Teen Vogue editors, as well as representatives from the CFDA and Target.

“The box she built for her application was beautiful and you saw the laser-cut print emulated again in the clothing. It was thought through and to remember it so specifically all this time later really solidifies that.”

Robertson’s intricate honeycomb laser-cut package design was created during Hurricane Sandy with the help of a friend in Dorchester. It featured a panel made of a silk print of a Bryce Canyon photograph taken by her father, a red rock to crystal blue sky aesthetic shown clearly through the collection’s color story. Delicate bronze edging on the box is echoed in her designs. Swatches of fabric included prints created with hand-dripped Indonesian wax to imitate an evening snowfall in her home state.

“A couple of my friends live in New York and work in fashion so I’ve been to shows at Milk Studios. You look at the way they have it for fashion shows and shoots, and everyone has everything laid out from head to toe,” Robertson said. “That’s what I think makes it. It’s obviously about the clothes but it’s the whole vision on top of it, too.”

Post win, Robertson is letting her career path unfold at a less aggressive pace. She’s taking the summer off, rather than opting for an internship with a designer. But she still plans to design before returning to school in the fall. She dreams of someday working for Dries Van Noten and admires designers with ultra cool sensibilities, counting Preen, Carven, and Ostwald Helgason, among her favorites.

Her $25,000 scholarship also came with a first-class ticket to Target’s headquarters in Minneapolis to hang out with its fashion team, which she authoritatively assured was “awesome.”

In the fall, she’ll continue her studies with the goal of creating a portfolio and a range of tangible pieces that she hopes will catch the eye of a design house. The competition and her win solidified her decision.

“This competition pushed me. I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer but it was more for the classic reason like, ‘This is cool.’ But why is it cool? Like, what is it? [It] pushed me to find what my aesthetic is and expedited that process.”

While Robertson sees a move to New York in her future as a designer, she shows a lot of pride in coming from MassArt and putting down roots in Boston.“

In a way it’s like Utah. No one thinks that Utah is fashionable but at the same time you can manipulate it and make it awesome,” she said. “Your day-to-day human being walking around in Boston isn’t necessarily going to be inspirational, but there are a lot of really cool people here.” She continues: “It’s not like you have to be surrounded by [fashion] to make it awesome.”
